Fall Semester Staff Feedback Meetings
As part of our plan to better serve you, I would like to seek your input.  The Fall Semester Teacher Feedback Meetings are designed for me to visit with you to get your thoughts on how we can better support you and your colleagues.

If you would like to participate in the Fall Semester Staff Feedback Meetings, CLICK HERE to sign up for a time to meet with me for approximately 15 minutes next week.  If you are unable to meet with me on the dates available, please send me an email to schedule a time to visit.  As always, you can send me an email anytime if you have concerns, questions or suggestions to help our district get better at meeting the needs of all students and staff.

Thank you for a great week.
Monday, October 22 was a great day of learning how to personalize learning for kids.  My challenge to you is to consider your lesson plan as your tool to make individual plans for interventions and extensions for each student.  What will you do differently because of your learning this week?  How will it impact your planning?

Need reminders of strategies from Monday?  CLICK HERE to access the Google Slide from Monday's training.  It includes the links where everyone added their ideas for interventions and extensions.

If you are in need of training/guidance related to something we have in place here in BRISD, please complete the Professional Learning Request Form.  We are willing to meet one-on-one, in campus teams, or in district groups...all based on need.  There is no such thing as a bad request...if you have a need, do not hesitate to make a request!

#2 FA2 WINDOW

The FA2 is November 5th-9th.  Remember to review the FA Testing Dates & Requirements 2018-19 document for information about Formative Assessments to which you are responsible.  Work with campus administration to plan testing dates that do not conflict.

One change that will be implemented for FA2 is that central office will be printing all test forms (answer documents) for all teacher administering an FA. Even if you are planning to use the Online Response System to have students enter their data, you will still need to use an answer document for students to record their answers. Answer documents will be placed in your boxes prior to the FA2 window. As a reminder central office will also scan all test forms (answer documents) into DMAC upon completion of the FA.

#3 FREQUENT, SMALL-GROUP, PURPOSEFUL TALK

Sean Cain addresses the importance of student collaboration and planned questions in his book The Fundamental Five.  Please take a moment to view the brief video below:

Are my students afraid to fail?
Have I equipped my students with specific strategies so they know what to do
when they don't know what to do?
Does collaboration naturally occur in my classroom, or is it forced?

The facility committee met on Thursday, October 4 to discuss the future of the district's buildings.  Please click on this link to gain access to all handouts provided to the committee.

A key question that was asked was how much longer will it be before our buildings run out of space.  This image illustrates the maximum capacity of all buildings and where our enrollment was in 2017, where it will be in 2020 and where it will be in 2025.  Maximum capacity is where every room holds 25 students 8 periods per day.  Based on this graphic and our enrollment today, the elementary and high school are at maximum capacity, and the middle school currently has every room being utilized for instruction or for special programs such as dyslexia and special education.

The next facility committee is scheduled for
Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the BRISD board room.

WINK’S WEEKLY WORDS

Thank you for another great week of learning.  On Monday, 10/22, our professional learning day will focus in on interventions and extensions for all kids.  To wrap your mind around possibilities associated with this topic, I encourage you to watch the video in this tweet and ask yourself this question.  What barriers do I put up that prevent me from personalizing learning for kids?

#4 THE IMPORTANCE OF GREETING STUDENTS AT THE DOOR

If you follow me on twitter (@matthewtodd05) you probably saw an edutopia article that I retweeted about greeting students at the door.  For a link to the original tweet, click here.
When you get a chance, read the article!  The moral of the story is this: "Greeting students at the door sets a positive tone and can increase engagement and reduce disruptive behavior."

Week of October 8 (1.8)

WINK’S WEEKLY WORDS

CLICK HERE TO READ MY BLUE RIDGE COMMUNITY BLOG

Thank you for all of your hard work to make our 1st FA week a great success.  We have great data that will help us all narrow our focus for growth.  Additionally, thank you so much for all that you have done to make September a great one for kids.  You are making this a great school year for everyone.

As we begin October, I challenge each of your to reflect on your C4B4Meroutines, procedures, relationships, and engagement expectations.  Remember these are the 4 kid level areas that inspire students to chase excellence in their learning.   Where do you want to improve in the next 2 weeks?  Where are students falling short?  By setting short-term goals, student achievement always improves.

Upcoming Events

  • Mon, Oct 8 - No School (State Fair Day)
  • Fri, Oct 19 - End of 1st 9 Weeks

#4 LEVELS OF ENGAGEMENT

At times, we tend to only think in terms of engagement being related to commitment.  However, take a look at the commitment piece above...also see the visual of the student to the right.  Commitment to a task is directly related to how well a teacher sells the content (this falls under Relationships for Learning, student to content).

Think about your least engaged student...or perhaps a lesson that you taught in which you noticed an overall lack of engagement.  How well did you sell your content?  Did you get commitment because of the sell, or did you just expect it?

Focus on getting your students to commit to the lesson/activity...you'll be surprised what it does to engagement.
